10 Reasons to choose Tomjachu when visiting South Africa
Although we believe there to be more than just 10 reasons, here is our short-list of why we believe Tomjachu Bush Retreat is perfect for your safari vacation when visiting South Africa.
Location, location, location!
Situated on its own 55ha private nature reserve, in the heart of Mpumalanga, Tomjachu offers unrivalled views, and the utter serenity and tranquility of pristine indigenous Lowveld bush.
In spite of the seemingly secluded location, we are based only 15km outside Nelspruit (Mbombela), the regions capital, making Tomjachu the perfect place for a safari vacation and to arrive in style, relax after a long journey, and explore the Greater Kruger Region.
- 15 minutes from Nelspruit (Mbombela)
- 35 minutes to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MPQ)
- 45 minutes to Malelane gate of Kruger Park
Family Friendly
Tomjachu is owned and run by the third generation of the Fillery family, after whom the property is named (Tom, Jack and Hugo), so clearly family, and family experiences, are important to us.
With no Big 5 animals on the reserve, children and parents are free, and encouraged, to explore their surroundings and get close to nature. On foot, on bikes, or on our open Safari Land Rover, children of all ages are welcome at Tomjachu! We also have a children’s menu for dinner.
Malaria Free
Tomjachu is situated outside of the Malaria Risk Zone as published by the South African National Travel Health Network (saNTHNet).
Of course, we do still always advise our guests to take precaution, particularly between September and May.
Activities for all, and Freedom to explore
We offer a range of activities for all travellers and ages, and the freedom to explore.
Those looking for adventure can freely walk, run, hike and cycle on the reserve along over 15kms of marked trails, winding through plains, mountains and valleys, amongst abundant plains game such as giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu and much more.
Alternatively enjoy a more relaxing Nature Drive, leisurely Guided Bush-walk, go fishing for bass in the Dam, or relax by the pool listening to the orchestra of the bush and enjoying the view!
Green Travel
At Tomjachu we are all about conservation, and we have committed ourselves to the TIES philosophy of Eco-Tourism.
We strive to minimise the impact of our ecotourism business in a number of ways, such as recycling most of our waste, supporting local businesses, encouraging water saving, and using biodegradable amenities, amongst many others.
We also offer our guests the chance to offset their travel emissions by donating to Greenpop.
Genuine African hospitality
For our friendly, warm and welcoming staff, the guest experience is their top priority – always. With a relaxed and informal, but professional approach, you are made to feel welcome and at home, with attentive and discreet service, as our reviews clearly demonstrate.
Food to write home about
At Tomjachu you can enjoy candlelit dinners in the Homestead dining room, sumptuous picnic baskets to enjoy on the reserve, and bush dining experiences under the stars; and they all have one thing in common – delicious food!
We are extremely proud of our chefs, and they rarely fail to deliver food which outweighs our four star grading.
Wildlife galore!
The Tomjachu nature reserve boasts over 40 species of mammals, 272 species of bird (and counting), and innumerable plant, insect and reptile species. If you enjoy bird watching or just love nature, Tomjachu is a wildlife wonderland, making it the perfect destination for a safari vacation!
Something different – accommodation variety
Ranging from double and twin suites in the historic Homestead, and 2- and 4-sleeper cottages, up to our 5* 12-sleeper Villa, Tomjachu offers a variety of Nelspruit accommodation choices to suit your needs and preferences.
All of our accommodation is lovingly decorated and well appointed, replete with family antiques, and with attention to detail in mind.
Those views…
Almost every guest that walks through our doors comments on our spectacular mountain views which spread into the distance from every room and vantage point on the property. Where better to sit back and enjoy a few days of relaxation with this as your backdrop?
