Get the best of the Lowveld and book your South African winter holiday accommodation.
We are very fortunate in South Africa because we have so many different climatic regions. Down here in the Lowveld, even in the midst of winter our subtropical climate means you can enjoy warm days with clear blue skies. This makes Tomjachu, located in the heart of the Lowveld, an ideal winter holiday destination.
As Autumn approaches we have seen the slow disappearance of the rain clouds along with many of our seasonal feathered friends who are now travelling North. The dryer winter months are the best time of the year for wildlife viewing as the vegetation is more sparse and the grasses low.
Easily spot ground birds such as the beautiful Yellow-throated Longclaw, the Swainson’s Spurfowl and the Wattled Lapwing. The Raptors are also often out searching for snakes and lizards in the day so sightings are usually good during the winter months.
The smaller animals that you struggle to see in summer, are also now out and about and more visible. Because of the cooler temperatures, Tortoises and large lizards like the Blue Head Agama have to bathe in the sun right in the middle of the day to soak up the heat and top up their energy reserves.
You might even be lucky and see the fleet-footed Serval, a porcupine shuffling along the trails or a timid and solitary red duiker foraging for food.
The larger game animals are drawn to the waterholes to drink every morning and evening, so you are almost guaranteed to see them around the dams and springs at these times.
Evenings can cool down quite a bit with lows of 9 degrees Centigrade, but this only means spending gorgeous cosy evenings snuggling up next to a crackling fire in the Homestead lounge, sipping award-winning South African wine from our superb house selection.
Valbonne Villa, Keepers cottage and Bush cottage are all equipped with fireplaces for ultimate privacy.
Winter is also the best time of year for Stargazing as the nights are longer and the sky more clear than in the summer heat haze. Our Night Sky Safaris offer an ethereal exploration of the night skies , with an opportunity to look into deep space through a high powered telescope, and are best enjoyed after a sumptuous Bush Dinner at the lapa after coffee at the campfire.
