A Lowveld adventure
Gear-up and get ready to get a little dusty as you venture out to explore the vast landscapes of the retreat on a riveting mountain biking experience. Charge through the open Savannah bushveld and plunge into the deep valleys, indulging in up to 12km trails that span across the rugged terrain.
From mountain biking you can change the pace a bit and grab your hiking gear to set out on an extensive self-guided hike around the scenic property, allowing you the opportunity to delve into the natural wonders found on the reserve, and uncovering some of its best kept secrets like the Gorge and Gordon’s Pools. Trek through the bushveld and wind your way to the top of our Zebra Heights to bring the Bekker Mountains to centre stage, offering you some great photographic opportunities!
With your adventure well on its way, continue it underground with a descent to 150m beneath the earth’s surface in the nearby Sudwala Caves, the oldest known caves in the world, located only 50 minutes’ drive from Tomjachu. The vast caves were formed around 240 million years ago, shaped by the dissolution of soluble bedrock, especially carbonate rock such as limestone or dolomite. One of the many intriguing underground sights you can look forward to is a colony of Horseshoe bats which naturally set the scene for an exhilarating underground excursion. Accompanied by a guide, you will travel 600m exploring some of the intricate cave systems as well as ancient Karst systems crafted by water flowing beneath the earth’s surface. For the hard-core adventurer there is also the Crystal tour, but prepare to get wet and dirty.
Once your escapades have got the better of you and you’re ready to call it a day, settle back in at the retreat to enjoy some much needed chill time with a glass of wine and good company.
