Matumi Picnic Spot

This stunning and secluded location derives its name from the towering Matumi trees which line the stream. The Matumi tree is a protected tree, whose wood is traditionally used for ornamental carvings and furniture, as its wood is very hard and termite resistant. The wood was also used for railway sleepers up until the 1960s, after which it became scarce and was subsequently protected. The roots of these enormous trees grow in flowing water, and in their shade at our picnic spot, you can relax by the trickling stream with only the sounds of the birds to disturb your tranquility. In this wooded area, the bird life proliferates, and Turacos are often seen flitting through the foliage. The illusive but stunning Narina Trogon has been spotted at this site. Red duiker, Bushbuck and other small game have also been spotted here.
